The world needs more materials than ever, and consumers are increasingly more discriminating about how products are made. So it's never been more important to find better ways to produce materials our customers need. We're doing this by adapting how we produce aluminium and expanding our portfolio of products.
Recently, we announced the Matalco joint venture with Giampaolo Group, one of the largest fully-integrated metal management organizations in North America. Through Matalco, we can now provide a full suite of aluminium products: from low-carbon aluminium made with hydropower at our Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean facilities to recycled solutions.
We're delighted to have a partner who shares our ambition to provide customers with more options to help them reduce their carbon footprint. We can’t wait to work in partnership with Giampaolo Group to grow Matalco and support the drive to net zero."
- Jakob Stausholm, Chief Executive, Rio Tinto
Recently, we announced the Matalco joint venture with Giampaolo Group, one of the largest fully-integrated metal management organizations in North America. Through Matalco, we can now provide a full suite of aluminium products: from low-carbon primary aluminium made with hydropower at our Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean facilities to recycled solutions.
The venture supports our goal of supplying low-intensity materials and achieving net zero emissions from our operations by 2050.
Established in 2005, Matalco is one of North America’s fast growing and leading producers of high-quality aluminium billet and slab. It has 7 state-of-the-art remelting and casting facilities that can produce more than 875, 000 tons of recycled aluminium annually.
Billet is one of the most widely used aluminium product forms globally. It’s produced in different diameters and lengths, depending on the cylindrical mold used during casting. Common uses are in everything from buildings to cars and electronics.
Aluminum is one of the most environmentally-friendly metals on the planet. By percentage, aluminum is the most recycled metal of any industrial metal. Of the more than 1 billion tons of aluminum estimated to have been put into use, roughly 75% is still in use today, thanks to recycling.
