ALMA, Canada – Rio Tinto a débuté les travaux de construction pour augmenter de 202 000 tonnes métriques sa capacité de couler des billettes d'aluminium à faible teneur en carbone et à haute valeur ajoutée à son aluminerie d’Alma, au Québec.
Le centre de coulée existant sera agrandi et accueillera de nouveaux équipements à la fine pointe de la technologie, tels que des fours, un puit de coulée, des refroidisseurs et des systèmes de manutention, d’inspection, de sciage et d’empaquetage. La mise en service est prévue pour le premier semestre de 2025.
L’investissement de 240 millions de dollars canadiens permettra d’utiliser une plus grande partie de l'aluminium produit par Rio Tinto pour fabriquer des billettes à partir d’hydroélectricité renouvelable. Rio Tinto sera ainsi plus agile et flexible pour répondre à la demande croissante d’extrudeurs nord-américains en produits variés à haute valeur ajoutée, destinés principalement à l’industrie de l’automobile et de la construction.
Le projet devrait générer des retombées économiques estimées à plus de 200 millions de dollars pour le Québec, créer environ 40 nouveaux emplois permanents et contribuer à soutenir les 770 emplois existants à l'aluminerie d’Alma.
Le directeur exécutif des Opérations Atlantique de Rio Tinto Aluminium, Sébastien Ross, a déclaré : « Cette expansion de notre capacité de coulée de billettes d'aluminium à faible teneur en carbone au Québec nous permettra de mieux répondre à la demande croissante de nos clients pour des alliages de haute qualité et des produits à valeur ajoutée fabriqués avec de l'hydroélectricité renouvelable. Nous sommes heureux d’avoir débuté les travaux de construction ce printemps, comme prévu et de pouvoir compter sur l’expertise d’employés qualifiés, d’équipementiers québécois de classe mondiale et sur nos partenaires pour concrétiser ce projet annoncé l’an dernier. »
