SAGUENAY, Canada – Rio Tinto investit 105 millions de dollars canadiens pour moderniser ses Installations portuaires de Port-Alfred, à Saguenay, au Québec. L’investissement permettra notamment d’améliorer la sécurité et l’efficacité des opérations de réception et de déchargement de matières premières utilisées pour produire de l’aluminium dans les autres sites de Rio Tinto dans la région.
Afin d’adapter les infrastructures aux dimensions des navires actuels, une nouvelle plateforme sera construite au bout du quai Duncan pour faciliter l’amarrage. Le quai Powell sera aussi réaménagé pour y recevoir et décharger l’alumine. Ces travaux incluent l’ajout d’un nouveau système de déchargement, le démantèlement d’une partie d’un entrepôt et la rénovation des infrastructures d’accostage de navires.
Sébastien Ross, directeur exécutif des Opérations Québec pour Rio Tinto a déclaré : « Cet investissement important permettra à nos employés de travailler dans un environnement encore plus sécuritaire, grâce à la modernisation de nos quais et de notre système de déchargement d’alumine à Port-Alfred, qui est en opération depuis 95 ans. Depuis le début du projet, Rio Tinto échange avec le comité bon voisinage et collabore en continu avec les différentes parties prenantes pour poursuivre son engagement envers la sécurité, l’environnement et la communauté. »
Les travaux de construction se dérouleront sur deux ans, du début 2021 à la fin de 2022.
Les retombées économiques sont estimées à environ 60 millions de dollars au Québec et une centaine de travailleurs seront impliqués au sommet des travaux.
En service depuis 1926, les Installations portuaires de Rio Tinto permettent de décharger environ 125 navires par année et d’acheminer plus de cinq millions de tonnes de matières premières nécessaires à la production d’aluminium au Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean.
