MONTRÉAL, Canada – Rio Tinto investit 87 millions de dollars américains pour augmenter sa production d'aluminium à faible teneur en carbone au Canada avec 16 nouvelles cuves à son centre d'électrolyse AP60, dans la région du Saguenay, au Québec.
L'investissement permettra d'augmenter la production de l’usine d’environ 45 %, soit 26 500 tonnes métriques d'aluminium primaire annuellement, pour atteindre une capacité de 86 500 tonnes métriques, et d'assurer l'avenir d’environ 100 emplois au sein de l’installation.
Rio Tinto prévoit que le marché mondial de l'aluminium connaîtra une croissance moyenne de 3,3 % par an au cours de la prochaine décennie, la forte demande étant stimulée par la transition énergétique et la décarbonisation.
Le chef de la direction de Rio Tinto Aluminium, Ivan Vella, a déclaré : « Rio Tinto s'est engagé à renforcer sa position de leader dans la production d'aluminium à faible teneur en carbone fabriqué à partir d’hydroélectricité afin de répondre à la demande de nos clients en Amérique du Nord et en Europe. Notre technologie AP60 est l’une des plus efficaces sur le plan énergétique, des plus respectueuses de l'environnement et des plus rentables disponibles aujourd’hui. Elle produit de l'aluminium dont la teneur en carbone est parmi les plus faibles au monde grâce à l'hydroélectricité renouvelable du Québec. Nous évaluons présentement des possibilités d'investissements supplémentaires, alors que nous progressons dans le développement de la technologie d’électrolyse sans carbone ELYSIS avec nos partenaires. »
Les nouvelles cuves seront construites dans le bâtiment existant du centre technologique AP60 au Complexe Jonquière, qui compte actuellement 38 cuves. Les travaux commenceront au printemps 2022 et devraient être achevés à la fin de 2023. Rio Tinto étudiera simultanément la possibilité d'ajouter des cuves AP60 supplémentaires sur le même site.
La technologie AP60 a été mise au point par les équipes de recherche et développement de Rio Tinto, dont le Centre de recherche et développement Arvida, et génère sept fois moins de gaz à effet de serre que la moyenne de l'industrie. Depuis leur mise en service au Saguenay en 2013, les cuves de technologie AP60 ont produit plus de 465 000 tonnes d'aluminium à faible teneur en carbone.
