ALMA, Canada – Rio Tinto investit 92 millions de dollars canadiens supplémentaires dans des travaux de remplacement et de réfection pour améliorer la fiabilité de sa centrale hydroélectrique Isle-Maligne, qui est essentielle à la production d'hydroélectricité pour fabriquer de l’aluminium à faible teneur en carbone au Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, au Québec.
Située à Alma, la centrale a été mise en service il y a 95 ans et est la plus ancienne du réseau hydroélectrique de Rio Tinto.
Les travaux commenceront cet été et s'étaleront sur deux ans, avec le remplacement complet d'un groupe turbine-alternateur et la réalisation de travaux de réfection sur un autre. Des technologies de pointe en matière d’instrumentation et de gestion de l’information seront intégrées aux groupes turbine-alternateur, améliorant encore d’avantage l’excellence opérationnelle de nos centrales.
Sébastien Ross, directeur exécutif des opérations de Rio Tinto au Québec, a déclaré : « Ces travaux de remplacement à la centrale Isle-Maligne représentent un investissement important de Rio Tinto dans la région, qui nous permettra de péréniser nos activités hydroélectriques et de maintenir notre production d'aluminium à faible empreinte carbone au Québec. »
Les retombées économiques sont estimées à plus de 75 millions de dollars au Québec et plus d’une centaine de travailleurs seront impliqués au sommet des travaux.
L’ingénierie, la fabrication et l’installation du nouveau groupe turbine-alternateur seront effectués par GE Énergie renouvelable.
Cet investissement s'ajoute à un projet de réfection de 160 millions de dollars canadiens annoncé en octobre 2020 pour remplacer les vannes de la centrale Isle-Maligne.

Elle a contribué à l'élaboration de normes de production responsable pour l'industrie mondiale en tant que membre fondateur de l'Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), devenant le premier producteur à proposer l'aluminium ASI en 2018.
