Montréal - Rio Tinto introduira sa première solution de recyclage en boucle fermée pour compléter sa production de billettes d'aluminium à faible empreinte carbone, offrant ainsi à ses clients un plus grand choix pour répondre à la demande croissante des consommateurs pour des produits durables.
Le service sera disponible à partir de 2021, offrant aux clients en Amérique du Nord une nouvelle solution de reprise des rebuts et de production d'alliages de haute qualité fabriqués avec du contenu recyclé.
Tolga Egrilmezer, vice-président, Ventes et marketing, Rio Tinto Aluminium, a déclaré : « Notre objectif est de travailler avec les clients pour leur fournir des produits de haute qualité qui répondent à leurs besoins. Nous avons développé cette nouvelle solution de recyclage à la demande de clients qui souhaitent avoir la possibilité de réutiliser leurs rebuts d'extrusion. C'est une offre qui combine l'aluminium primaire produit de manière responsable et le métal recyclé, ce qui démontre notre engagement en faveur d'une économie circulaire plus durable. Nos activités hydroélectriques au Canada produisent de l'aluminium dont l'empreinte carbone est parmi les plus faibles au monde et nous enrichissons maintenant notre offre de produits avec une véritable solution de recyclage en boucle fermée, qui élargit encore notre large gamme de solutions axées sur le client. Nous espérons que cette initiative sera la première d'une longue série en ce qui concerne le recyclage. »
Pour ses services de recyclage, Rio Tinto s'associera avec Shawinigan Aluminium Inc. (SAI), qui construira une fonderie de pointe de 10 millions de dollars canadiens, adjacente au centre de coulée de billettes de SAI au Québec. L'installation aura la capacité de recycler 30 000 tonnes d'aluminium par an.
Les experts en marketing technique de Rio Tinto aideront les clients à choisir le contenu recyclé approprié ainsi que l'alliage optimal pour leurs besoins spécifiques.
Rio Tinto est un leader de l'industrie de l'aluminium responsable. En 2016, l’entreprise a lancé le premier aluminium certifié à faible teneur en carbone de l'industrie, RenewAlTM. En 2018, Rio Tinto est devenue la première entreprise à recevoir la certification de l'Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) comme producteur d'aluminium « responsable ». ELYSIS, une coentreprise entre Rio Tinto et Alcoa soutenue par Apple et les gouvernements du Canada et du Québec, travaille aussi à la mise au point d'une technologie d'électrolyse révolutionnaire sans émissions directes de carbone.
