Montréal, Canada – Les communautés innues de Uashat mak Mani-utenam et Matimekush-Lac John ont signé aujourd'hui une Entente de réconciliation et de collaboration avec la Compagnie minière IOC. L’entente a été baptisée « Ussiniun », ce qui signifie « renouveau » en langue innue.
Cette entente de partenariat à long terme jettera les bases d’une nouvelle relation mutuellement bénéfique fondée sur le dialogue, l'ouverture et la confiance entre l’entreprise et les deux communautés au cours des prochaines décennies.
Elle facilitera une participation accrue des communautés innues aux activités de IOC en leur procurant des avantages financiers et en soutenant des initiatives socio-économiques dans les domaines de l'emploi, de la formation et des occasions d'affaires. IOC a l'intention d’embaucher un plus grand nombre d'Innus et de mettre en place des mesures visant à développer les capacités et la compétitivité des entreprises innues. IOC collaborera aussi avec les Innus en en ce qui a trait à la protection de l'environnement ainsi qu’à la préservation et la promotion de leurs coutumes et pratiques culturelles uniques. Les détails financiers de l'entente sont confidentiels.
Le chef Réal McKenzie de Matimekush-Lac John a dit « Après 70 ans d’histoire, notre communauté Innu de Matimekush Lac-John conclut cette entente avec la compagnie minière IOC, qui nous permettra d’optimiser notre développement culturel, social et économique. Pour conclure, Ussiniun sera assurément bénéfique pour nos générations futures. »
Le chef Mike « Pelash » Mckenzie de Uashat mak Mani-utenam a déclaré : « Cette entente marque le début d’une nouvelle relation avec IOC, basée sur le respect et le partenariat. Les compensations et les retombées pour nos membres nous permettront de prendre encore plus en main le développement de notre communauté. Le respect démontré par IOC nous permettra de tourner la page sur un historique de conflits et de regarder l’avenir avec optimisme. »
Le président et chef de la direction de IOC, Clayton Walker, a déclaré : « Cette entente à long terme est une étape importante qui nous permet d'avancer ensemble et de construire des relations solides basées sur le respect, la confiance et les avantages mutuels. Nous nous engageons à travailler en collaboration avec les communautés de Uashat mak Mani-utenam et de Matimekush-Lac John afin de concrétiser les nombreux avantages de cette entente pour toutes les parties concernées. »
L'entente comprend aussi des excuses aux Innus de la part de IOC et prévoit le retrait de toutes les poursuites introduites par Uashat mak Mani-utenam et Matimekush-Lac John concernant les activités d'IOC, sécurisant ainsi les opérations minières actuelles et futures.
La signature d'aujourd'hui marque la fin d'un processus de négociation de plusieurs mois entre les trois parties. Des consultations approfondies ont eu lieu virtuellement et en personne dans les deux communautés entre les mois d'août et de novembre 2020.
