We have operations that have been active in the US for more than 150 years, producing and supplying materials critical to the nation's industrial and energy needs.

From deploying low-carbon technologies to investing in renewable energy solutions, we’re working to reduce our environmental footprint while meeting growing demand for responsibly sourced materials.

Our US operations

Our operational footprint in the US spans 8 states, employs a workforce of approximately 5,000 people, and produces a host of critical minerals including copper, lithium, aluminium, tellurium, gold, silver, borates and molybdenum.

Kennecott

Operation/Project

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, integrated copper mining operation located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and today is one of the top-producing mines in the world. Our operation encompasses surface and underground mines, a concentrator, smelter, and refinery, as well as rail infrastructure and a tailings storage facility.

California operations

Operation

From our mine in Boron, California, we mine borates, a naturally occurring mineral, which we then refine and transform into products essential to modern living. Boron is vital to plant growth, so it is used in fertilisers, but it is also used in other industries such as glass manufacturing, wood protection and insulation fibreglass – to name just a few.

Bessemer City

Operation

Bessemer City is our longest running operational lithium site, tracing its roots back to the 1950s, and produces one of the broadest portfolios of high-performance lithium products in the world, including lithium hydroxide, high-purity lithium metal, butyllithium and several other specialty lithium chemicals. This site provides an annual production capacity of 15,000 metric tons of lithium hydroxide.
