Modern slavery is a very real risk globally, including in developed markets. The latest global estimates indicate there are currently 50 million victims of modern slavery.

We know that we face a risk of involvement in modern slavery through our value chain, including through our suppliers.

Freedom from slavery is a human right and we incorporate our work on preventing and addressing any involvement in modern slavery into our broader human rights program.

Eliminating modern slavery

Addressing modern slavery is central to our sustainability efforts and commitment to a safe, responsible and profitable business.

We expect our employees and suppliers (including contractors and agents) to stay alert to the risks of modern slavery and work to prevent it.

Beyond setting high standards, we focus on targeted training, knowledge sharing and mitigation measures designed to ensure effectiveness.

We also collaborate with governments and organisations to strengthen global policies and regulations.

Our statement on modern slavery

We publish an annual statement on modern slavery to share our progress and learnings and outline future priorities.

The statement provides an overview of our business, modern slavery risks within our operations and supply chains, due diligence efforts, training, stakeholder engagement and remediation processes. It also explains how we assess our effectiveness, including internal tracking, audits, grievance monitoring, stakeholder feedback, and applying impact measurement frameworks. Our statement complies with global modern slavery reporting laws.

Respecting human rights is a key part of our social licence to operate. We work together with partners such as civil society organisations to drive collective impact. We have a responsibility to respect the human rights of people, both inside and outside of our business, in alignment with international expectations and local law.”

Our progress

We continue to use a theory of change model to evaluate the impact of our modern slavery approach and measure our progress. Below are examples of key activities and intended impacts:

  • Identifying and assessing risk in our supply chain: We typically conduct more than 10,000 third party due diligence screenings and more than 150 specialist human rights reviews every year. These allow us to tailor our mitigation actions to the risk profile of individual suppliers and improve performance on human rights within our supplier base.
  • Annual risk assessments at our managed assets: Our policies and procedures require our managed assets to assess their modern slavery risk on an annual basis, leading to better insights on our collective risk profile, effective prioritisation of effort throughout the business and early identification of issues.
  • Building capacity: We deliver targeted human rights workshops and training for senior leaders, employees and suppliers, designed to enable them to identify modern slavery risks relevant to their role, understand the severity of identified risks and how to take appropriate next steps.
  • Engagement and collaboration: We engage with industry groups and workers’ organisations such as ICMM and the UN Global Compact, to contribute our learnings, share our challenges and advance collective action on human rights globally.

Assessing our effectiveness

We are consistently ranked well in various modern slavery program benchmarks, including:

  • Monash Modern Slavery Benchmark (ASX) – In 2024 we scored ‘A’. We received a call out in 2024 for our disclosure of how we build our risk profile across supplier, worker and country profiles.
  • CCLA Modern Slavery Benchmark 2024 (UK) – In 2024 we scored level one, which is the lead score, and we were recognised for leading on human rights innovation among the 12 companies measured.

Support and advocacy

We support the UK, Australian and Canadian Modern Slavery Acts and proudly advocated for the establishment of the Australian Modern Slavery Act. In 2018, we endorsed the draft legislation and its final passage by the Australian Parliament, including by signing a multi-stakeholder letter to the Prime Minister.

We remain committed to continuously improving our implementation of modern slavery laws around the world.

Collaboration

We engage with various multi-stakeholder initiatives to share our learnings and improve the industry’s collective response to modern slavery. This includes the Clean Energy Council of Australia’s Modern Slavery Working Group and the UN Global Compact Network Australia’s Modern Slavery Community of Practice.

We continue to co-chair the Human Rights Resources and Energy Collaborative (HRREC), a forum for practitioners to share insights, tackle challenges and develop best practices for respecting human rights and addressing modern slavery risks in operations and supply chains. It has more than 30 different active member companies from across the mining, energy and oil and gas sectors. Key achievements have included:

  • Developed a guide to human rights training for practitioners, and;
  • Participated in a policy roundtable with representatives from industry, academia, government and civil society.
